Gospel Songstress Sherrie Keys moves center stage.

When you think of gospel music and great gospel singing, cities like Chicago and Detroit come to mind first. One doesn't expect a fresh breeze in gospel music to come from Los Angeles, a city more commonly associated with rock music and pop music.

Los Angeles' own Sherrie Keys is a contemporary gospel recording artist who captivates audiences with her elegant, hauntingly beautiful voice. Armed with a warm spirit and an infectious smile, her musical gifts serve as a platform for ministry beyond music. Sherrie brings a beautiful, fresh voice to gospel music. The talented, gifted soprano is a daughter of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) and has recently launched the formation of her own music label to distribute her recordings.

Birthed in a musical family, Keys has been singing in choirs most of her life, opting to remain in the shadows of the music industry rather than pursue the spotlight. This time around, all eyes will be on Sherrie Keys as she readies her CD release "For Anointed Ears Only" under her own Chubby Girl Records label.

"Maturity complements gospel singing." says Keys. "You need to have experienced life, with all of its ebbs and flows to truly execute gospel music. You have to have loved and lost, buried a loved one or two, or suffered the pain of disappointment to sing with conviction. I didn't have enough life experience when I was 21 years old. And besides, I didn't choose music ministry. Music ministry chose me."

Keys states that she brings an eclectic style of singing to gospel music. "Growing up in Memphis gave me a unique ear for sounds. I've been influenced by it all, from the Delta blues to jazz to rock to bluegrass. It's all mixed in there somewhere."

Keys states that if gospel music is the conveyor of good news, then the genre must become the most popular form of music worldwide. "Everyone wants to hear good news ... The best news I can share is that all my sins are forgiven and that Heaven has been earmarked for you and me."

If there’s truth to the saying “It’s not over until the fat lady sings” then Los Angeles based Chubby Girl Records is destined to become a profitable niche label of the gospel music industry. In an industry where gospel music is distinctive and revered, Chubby Girl Records celebrates and embraces gifted gospel recording artists who just happen to be ‘pleasingly plump’.

The primary focus of the label is gospel music. Gospel music is one of the few genres where physical appearance takes a backseat to good old-fashioned singing. According to Sherrie Keys, CEO and President: “The beauty of the cross is the focus of gospel music. People who hunger for God’s presence really don’t consider a singer’s image as part of gospel music’s appeal.” Keys states that praise and worship is the passion and mission of her label and that music ministry takes precedence over image-conscious trends. “Our calling is higher than gospel music. Keys, a gifted singer in her own right, will be the first gospel recording artist distributed on the label’s roster.

According to a Purdue University study, 65% of churchgoers are in the overweight or obese category. Gospel music lovers are an influential demographic with considerable purchasing power. “Music is an integral part of pop culture. The message to plus-size consumers should be that living a life with purpose can be achieved at any size. We don’t advocate obesity as a healthy lifestyle choice. We advocate a positive self-image as the foundation to holistic health.”

In conjunction with the music label’s launch, the company is designing a clothing line targeting the plus-size market. Keys believes that plus-size women deserve fashion equality and that the demographic has strong growth potential in an otherwise stagnant retail market. So are retailers poised to offer fashionable Sunday clothes to the faithful? Keys laughs, “We won’t need couture robes when we get to heaven but a few designer garments down here would be divine.”
